Parker-Hallett Store 1860

Captain Joseph Parker built this store in 1860 and lived upstairs until 1867 when he sold it to Captain Hartson Hallett whose family operated it for the next 118 years.

Prior to this time,Parker had been co-partners with his brother-in-law,Freeman L.Scudder in the store which was known for many years as the O'Neil Country store.

Born in 1821, Parker commanded three ships in his career, the WATER WITCH, SANTEE, and the WILDFIRE. On two of these vessels, Capt.Parker met with serious mishaps. The SANTEE sank during a storm off the coast of Bermuda in April of 1851. Capt. Parker suffered a broken leg in the mishap. After a few days adrift, they were rescued by the brig JAMES S. ELWELL. When they finally landed in Boston,a full month after the wreck,Capt. Parker finally had his broken leg set. A few years after this, the WILDFIRE also was wrecked In a storm. Before being rescued,Capt. Parker suffered from a severe sunstroke which would affect him for the rest of his life. After the wreck of the WILDFIRE, Capt. Parker retired from the sea and joined Freeman

Scudder at his business.

After building his own store in 1860, he owned it for seven years. He then sold the business to Hartson Hallett 2nd. Hallett was also a former sea captain. During his career at sea, Hallett had command of three schooners, the GRANITE STATE, the WOLLCOTT, and the HENRY CLAY. Hallett was named Worshipful Master of Fraternal Lodge In 1853.

The store remained In the ownership of the Hallett family for 118 years, until Albert C.Hallett sold the building in 1957. Today, the structure hosts the Kandy Korner, selling homemade chocolates of all shapes and sizes.
